I remember a time when a gentleman reached out to me for executive coaching and stated his problem as follows. He said, “I have got feedback that I lack executive presence and I don’t understand what that means”
Executive Presence is a mystical phrase as far as corporate lingo goes, but it is also catching on and spreading like wildfire. It is understood in different ways by different people. Its real meaning is open to interpretation. However, it would be reasonable to say that Executive Presence is about the impact that a leader generates and the attention he or she commands by virtue of their sheer presence. You know it when you see it.
It has a lot to do with confidence. Outer Confidence powered by Inner Presence. Leaders may or may not be born with it. They can cultivate it for sure.
I do see the lack of executive presence as one of the key reasons why able leaders stagnate in their careers. They are meeting KPIs, but they are not growing in the organizational hierarchy. Many-a-time, they don’t have a clue why they are stuck. They are left wondering. But, on deeper exploration, it does come down to some or the other trait of Executive Presence that is found missing in the leader.

Executive Presence cannot be faked. It is not a mask you can don. People see through fakes and it dilutes a leader’s personal brand like nothing else. So we are going to cultivate Presence. We are going to unhinge and question some rules. We are going to push our boundaries. We are going to develop new skills. We are going to work on the Inner Core. We are going to emerge more confident!

Case Study
Suren (name changed ) was a CXO of a manufacturing company. He was part of the leadership team and one of his jobs was to steer the monthly meeting of the leadership team.
Challenge: This monthly meeting never stayed on agenda. His peers would meander and his boss would get into micro-details. He was frustrated.
Stakeholder feedback was that he needed to be more assertive and build his executive presence.
Discovery: As we discussed the challenge, it became clear that Suren’s value of humility was coming in the way of his assertiveness. He held back from interrupting as he did not want to appear rude or arrogant. This was a revelation to him!!
Action: With this understanding, Suren recognized that it is indeed possible to be direct and humble at the same time. He took initiative to align the stakeholders prior to the next meeting and was able to get a better output.
Result: He saw an increase in his ability to influence and was able to get many decisions implemented through his new-found assertiveness.
